The history of the family in Kaltenbach extends back to 1676, when Johann Guedemann moved there from Endenburg to marry Maria Strohmeyer. All the Guedemanns ever born in the Kandern River Valley are descendants of this couple. With Katharina Barbara Asal he sired a son who was born on September 15, 1863, in Edenbach near Kaltenbach. Five months before the child was bor Johann Jacob Friedrich applied for permission to travel to America with the statement: I want to take a trip to America and I will decide then if I will officially request to emigrate, depending on how well it goes for me in America. Arriving in America at the height of the Civil War, he decided to return to Germany and settle down in Kandern and marry Katharina Barbara Asal, with whom he had seven more children.
