      BIOGRAPHY - Owner of Rancho Las Animas (also called Las Animas o La Poza de Carnedero or La Brea) was a 26,519-acre (107.32 km2) Spanish land concession in present-day Santa Clara County given in 1803 by Viceroy Felix Berenguer de Marquina to Jose Mariano Castro.
      The rancho was regranted in 1835 to Castro's widow Josefa Romero de Castro by Mexican Governor Jose Figueroa.
      The present-day city of Gilroy is within the grant.

      Mariano Castro, son of Joaquin Ysidro Castro and Maria Martina Botiller was born somewhere around 1764-65 at Villa de Sinaloa. He was 14 yrs old when his father was recruited on 28 Apr 1775 for the Juan Bautista de Anza expedition of 1775-76 to Alta California.
      Mariano married Maria Josefa Romero at Mission Santa Barbara on 19 Feb 1791. Due to his military assignments their 10 children were born and baptized at Missions San Carlos, San Antonio de Padua, San Luis Obispo, and San Juan Bautista.

      On the 26th of January, 1830 Mariano Castro, of the Rancho de las Animas was laid to rest in the cemetery of the Church of Mission San Juan Bautista. Bio provided by Sheila Ruiz Harrell
