      (DEATH)
In the summer of 1765, a party of three soldiers were ordered by their captain to go to a mining camp in el Sur and take charge of prisoners who where to be returned to Loreto. They saw the tracks of a large mountain lion as they neared the paraje where they planned to spend the night.
Despite the heat of the season, Juan Maria Ruiz wrapped himself for the night in a mantle of strong fabric because he feared these animals that were known to have attacked the native Californians. Nevertheless, he was attacked. While still partially wrapped, he grabbed the beast by a leg and called out to his companions for help.
By the time they were able to distinguish the animal in the dark and kill it with their knives, Ruiz was terribly mauled. He recovered for a time, but finally died of his wounds, probably because they became infected.
The death of Juan Maria Ruiz was keenly felt in Loreto because he was a good man who had served in California for years, married into the prominent Carrillo family, and left a wife and six children.
